Renewed Tensions between U.S and Argentina for Delayed Plane in Ezeiza.

Tensions between U.S government and Argentine government have escalated to a diplomatic conflict.

Barak Obama’s government required yesterday explanations from Argentine State on a delayed military plane. The plane, which arrived in Ezeiza on 10th February, had military experts and training equipment destined to the rescuing and crisis management courses for the Federal Police requested by the Casa Rosada. It was delayed for undeclared “sensitive cargo”.

The U.S Department of State’s spokesperson demanded that all the material seized by Argentine authorities is “immediately” returned. Official sources stated that the U.S government had “called Argentine ambassador in Washington to manifest their surprise on how the (argentine) authorities had managed a perfectly agreed mission”.

In response, Argentine chancellor Hector Timerman anticipated yesterday that a formal complaint on behalf of State would be made to Washington.

When describing the seized material in Ezeiza, Timerman explained that there were found “from weapons to different drugs, amongst others, various doses of morphine”. He affirmed there was an attempt to “bring to the country material to intercept communications, various GPS of a revealing sophistication, technological elements containing secret codes and a trunk full of expired medicines”.

The U.S government has rebuffed the allegations. “The cargo was consistent with what had been previously informed” and it consisted of “the habitual material” for the agreed police training programme. This has led to Washington’s discomfort about the “slow and detailed” inquest in Buenos Aires.

It is worth remembering that relations between U.S and Argentine governments, before this incident, were not in good terms. Especially after Timerman’s denouncing that torturing techniques were taught in U.S police training programmes.  The fear of a new School of the Americas prevails.
