Eight men have been detained and one committed suicide after a series of drug raids carried out by the Federal Police. Security Secretary Sergio Berni informed media outlets of the event today after 15 raids throughout the city and province of Buenos Aires were conducted in order to disband a drug distribution gang. According to Berni, the gang members taken into custody worked predominantly in the neighbourhood of Las Cañitas.
Berni reported that large quantities of various types of drugs including cocaine, marijuana, LSD, crack, and ecstasy, wre seized in all the raids carried out in the capital and in the province of Buenos Aires.
In Belgrano, police stormed a house on Olleros street in which one of the gang leaders committed suicide upon their arrival. Berni told news agency Telam: “One of the delinquents had a gun and when the police were about to enter he shot himself in the head. In his apartment we found cocaine.”
The raids are a result of a six-month long investigation by the Federal Police, lead by Superintendent of Dangerous Drugs Néstor Roncaglia. The commissioner told reporters today that the drug leader that died had an armoured door meant to make it difficult for police to break in.
Roncaglia also stated: “As we were about to break the door down, he asked who it was from the inside. We explained we were the police and that he had to open the door. He said he did not want to, that there were no drugs in his house, that he had a gun and would shoot himself.”
According to the police chief, the officers tried to convince him to let them in and explained it was just a routine check. Police called for backup in case there were more individuals in the house waiting to attack them upon entering. Shortly after they discovered the man’s body and confirmed there were no other individuals in the house.
According to police, the apartment contained half a kilo of cocaine, money, and bullets. It was the main area from which the gang prepared the drugs for distribution.
The individuals in detention are Argentine and Bolivian. More raids are expected to take place as part of the same investigation.
